So it’s been a while since I’ve written a bonafide blog post.
Things have been busy. And just when it seems like things might get quiet, I tend to add more things on my list of shit to do.
Currently I’m finishing up edits on a YA novel that I plan to enter the slush pile trenches with this year. I thought I was mostly ready to query, but I got some great feedback and wanted to make a few changes before I got started.
It’s been interesting to say the least, but I think it makes my novel stronger, so I’m more than happy to put in the effort.
Even if it means digging through some less than comfortable memories to tell the story I want to tell.
Otherwise, I’ve been focusing pretty hard on my art lately. I’ve been taking on commissions, and I’ve got a pretty neat contest painting I’m working on for Oregon’s Habitat Conservation Stamp contest. So that will be fun! Assuming I finish on time.
I have a few more ideas for novels and art I want to do this year, but as always I’m limited by time. Still I’ll put my best foot forward and see where it gets me. Writing especially has been the one constant dream of my life–I’ve just never pursued it outside of a ‘hobby’ because I honestly believed I could never make it, and certainly would never make it as a living.
Now, I have a spark of hope. A spark that’s driving me to put in at least 15 hours a week on edits and another 15 on my art. Or maybe it’s not hope. Maybe I’m just that stubborn. Maybe it’ll get me somewhere. I hope that it does. But even if it didn’t, I don’t think that I could stop. It’s just something I’m driven to do.
Best of luck to all my writer friends braving the slush pile this year. I’ll be in it with you soon enough, and rooting for each and every one of you.
